Tim Rowan

This image from Tim Rowan although very organic in nature, I am not very fond of. It seems unrefined and unbalanced. For being considered tableware i find it to be disfunctional and think that it would be difficult to stack in the cupboard. I do like some of the glazing techniques on some of his pieces, but on this on it looks like a half hearted attempt to glaze. Again, unrefined and unbalanced, at least in my eyes.

  1. Like we discussed in class I'm glad you selected something you weren't so fond of to write about. Tim's cups are based in part off of Japanese tea bowls and this piece reflects that aesthetic. It is not meant as an everyday cup but as a ceremonial vessel. This piece is actually not glazed but is finished through the wood firing process. The work is put in a kiln and fired 'raw' and is 'glazed' by the wood ash and volatiles from the kiln. You might find looking at Peter Voulkos to be interesting. The Schnitzer Museum in Eugene has a Voulkos (which isn't very pretty in my opinion) that you can check out.
